Meet Gianna

Hi there! I’m Gianna, a fourteen year old Senior Girl Scout from Long Island New York. I love gymnastics, reading, hanging out with my sister or friends, and above all, I like to help people in need. As a senior Girl Scout, I knew I had to start working on my Gold Award, one big project that helps others in my community. At first I struggled with where to begin, who I should help, and how I could help them.

One day while at work with my mom we walked into North Shore Hematology and Oncology, a cancer treatment center. A patient with cancer would go there to receive their chemo therapy. They would often sit there for multiple hours at a time to receive their medicine and often feel sick and lonely. I heard a man who worked there yell “we need more blankets” and that’s when inspiration struck!

I could make chemo therapy patients feel loved and comforted while restocking the bare, blanket shelves in treatment centers by getting donations of blankets and sewing inspiring words like “hope” or “faith” onto them. After a bit of research I found even more ways I could help, I could make patient goodie bags filled with lotion and lip balm to combat some of the small problems associated with chemo therapy. My goal was simple to make chemo therapy patients feel comfortable, feel like they were being cuddled while receiving their treatment and just like that, Cuddles for Chemo was born.

I couldn’t have started this project without my mom, my Girl Scout troop leader, my Aunt Joy, and all my other family, friends, neighbors, and kind people who helped me along the way with advice or donations. Together we are creating more comfortable cancer treatment centers, one facility at a time!
